Echoing is a commissioned contemporary cello solo work created in collaboration with a music school in Westchester. The work draws inspiration from J. S. Bach and his approach to polyphonic writing, particularly the idea of allowing multiple independent voices to coexist and respond to one another.
The piece began with a fundamental question: how can a single instrument be divided into multiple voices? And how can these voices interact, respond, and echo one another?
Rather than treating the cello as a single unified voice, I explore its different registers as distinct musical voices. Each register takes on its own role and character, allowing the instrument to suggest the presence of multiple independent layers within a single sound source.
Throughout the work, these voices continuously intertwine, overlap, and respond to one another. Motives and gestures move between registers, creating an ongoing dialogue within the instrument itself. In this way, Echoing explores how the inherently monophonic nature of the cello can be transformed into a polyphonic musical space.
The title Echoing reflects this continuous process of response and recurrence: one voice emerges, another answers, and their traces continue to resonate through the instrument.
